Posted by Scott Anderson on November 2, 2023. Is there an incandescent bulb ban? The short answer: yes. Most incandescent and halogen products were phased out in 2023. The Department of Energy issued new requirements for lighting products and to put it simply, most incandescent and halogen products didn't make the cut. LED headlights refer to Light Emitting Diodes and these have become common fitment since they debuted in 2004, taking a fraction of the energy to run compared to HID lights or Halogen while having a much longer lifespan and giving clearer light. BMW i8 and new 7-series, plus certain Audi models are now using laser headlights. Step 1 Headlights. Unplug the stock harness and remove the headlights. Remove battery negative terminal. Take out the HID bulb from the plastic shell and remove the circular plastic piece. Screw in the HID bulb back into the headlight housing. Before you mount the ballast, test the HID light to make sure it lights up. The OSRAM Cool Blue Intense and the Phillips WhiteVision bulbs are both available in the W5W fitting, which will fit in most sidelights. These are street legal, but they have a whiter appearance than standard bulbs. If you’ve upgraded your headlights to HID bulbs or a halogen styling bulb, either of these will match perfectly. Insert the LED Unit. Squeeze the spring arms on each side of the LED unit together. Slide the arms into the brackets inside the housing. Push upward until the LED light unit clicks into place and the trim is flush with the ceiling. If the light doesn't fit flush, try to adjust the rear panel on the housing upwards. LED bulbs hardly burn-out compared to halogen bulbs. The LED bulbs are designed to last 50,000 hours and there are some designed to last more than 50,000 hours. LED bulbs produce more focus light beams that make visibility clear to drivers. The angle beam of the led light bulb is 360 degree, which means the light is designed to focus on the road. A halogen bulb is a form of lighting technology that’s ultimately an enhanced version of incandescent lighting, as it has a longer average lifespan and greater luminous efficacy. Halogens also have a higher temperature than incandescent lights, hence why many small halogen light bulbs have a rating of 250-300 watts. Factory LED lights are certified. Aftermarket LED's in halogen bases need to be certified or DOT approved. As far as I know, none are. Here is a disclaimer from Diode Dynamics, a large maker of bulbs: APPLICATION NOTICE: LED bulbs are legal in the USA for Fog Light use only. mbKL4.
